ABSENTEE VOTING
You
may request an absentee ballot for one
of the following
reasons:
- persons
outside of county on Election Day and through the early voting period;
-
students and spouse outside of county;
-
permanant absentee;
- jurors;
-
residents of certain institutions outside the county of residence;
- persons
over 65, hospitalized, ill or disabled;
-
caretaker;
-
election officials;
-
observance of a religious holiday;
- persons
possessing a valid commercial driver license;
-
military personnel and their families.
LEGAL PROCESS
FOR REQUESTING AN ABSENTEE BALLOT
We must receive your request in writing for an absentee
ballot. You may request a ballot not
more than (90) and not later than (7) days before the election. The request may serve as an application if
all of the following information is given:
- name of registered voter;
- the address of voter's
residence;
- the voter's social security
number;
- the address to mail the
ballot;
- reason for absentee voting;
- the election the voter
wishes to participate in;
- signature of voter
NURSING HOME
The
Election Commission will obtain a list of residents from
the nursing home before each election. We
will check that list to see who is a registered
voter, and will go to
the facility before the election to allow them to vote.
Persons may vote at the office during the
early voting period if they wish.
PERMANENT ABSENTEE
To be eligible for placement on the register, a voter shall
file a statement by the person’s licensed physician with the county
election
commission stating, under the penalty of perjury, that in the
physician’s
professional medical judgment, the patient (voter) is medically unable
to
appear at the polling place to vote and is medically unable to go to
the
commission office for early voting. The
statement shall be filed with the election commission office not less
than (5)
days before the election. Physician
Statement forms are available at the commission office.
Individuals on the permanent absentee
register are automatically mailed an application to vote by mail before
each
election.
EMERGENCY VOTING
A registered voter eligible to request the services of an
emergency registrar shall make such a request not more than twenty (20)
days
before the election and no later than the opening of the polls on
Election
Day. Upon the request the county
election commission shall appoint emergency registrars to go to the
hospital
with supplies for the person to be able to vote. In
addition, any eligible voter may vote
absentee by personal appearance at the commission office, not more than
(5)
days nor later than the day prior to the election if:
- due to the death of a relative,
this would result in the absense from the state or
county on Election Day;
- if the person receives a
subpoena or service of process requiring the voter's
presence on Election Day.
